How to Choose Your First Cigar

Walk into a well-stocked humidor for the first time and it's easy to freeze up. Rows of bands, a dozen shades of brown, sizes that range from a stubby robusto to a foot-long Churchill — where do you even start? The good news is that picking your first cigar isn't really about knowing everything. It's about narrowing down three things: strength, wrapper, and size.

Start with strength, not size

A common mistake is assuming a bigger cigar means a stronger smoke. It doesn't. Strength comes from the tobacco blend, not the dimensions — a long, thin cigar can hit much harder than a fat one. If you're new to cigars, ask for something mild to medium. You'll actually be able to taste it, rather than getting steamrolled by nicotine and missing the nuance entirely.

Let the wrapper guide your flavor expectations

The wrapper leaf contributes an outsized share of a cigar's flavor, and its color is a genuine clue. Lighter, golden-tan wrappers (often shade-grown) tend to be mild and creamy, with notes of hay, cream, or light nuttiness. Reddish-brown wrappers sit in the middle, offering a bit more spice and body. Dark, oily maduro wrappers — aged and fermented longer — bring deeper, sweeter, sometimes cocoa-and-espresso flavors, but often with more strength to match. If you don't know where to start, a shade-grown wrapper is the friendliest entry point.

Pick a size you'll actually enjoy smoking

Cigars are measured by length (inches) and ring gauge (diameter, in 64ths of an inch). A robusto — short and thick, usually around 5 inches by 50 ring gauge — is a great first choice because it's a manageable 45-60 minute smoke and gives you a real feel for the blend without demanding an hour and a half of your afternoon.

Don't be afraid to just ask

This is the single best piece of advice for a first-timer: tell whoever's behind the counter (or your server at the lounge) that you're new, and roughly what you like — maybe you're a bourbon drinker, maybe you prefer dark chocolate to citrus. A good tobacconist can translate those preferences into a cigar recommendation faster than any chart.
