Pairing Cigars with Whiskey: A Starter's Guide

The single most useful rule for a beginner is to pair body with body. A delicate, mild cigar gets steamrolled by a high-proof, heavily peated whiskey — you'll taste the drink and nothing else. Bourbon is the friendliest starting point

Sweet, corn-based, aged in heavily charred new oak, bourbon's natural notes of caramel, vanilla, and toast pair naturally with a wide range of cigars, especially ones with some sweetness of their own — Connecticut and Colorado wrappers tend to work particularly well here. It's a forgiving combination that's hard to get wrong.

Rye brings spice to the table

If your cigar has some pepper or cedar notes, a rye whiskey's characteristic spiciness can meet it head-on rather than getting buried. This pairing rewards cigars with a bit more kick — medium to full-bodied blends tend to hold their own better against rye's sharper edges.

Maduros want something with weight

A rich, cocoa-and-espresso maduro can stand up to a cask-strength bourbon or a sherry-finished whiskey without being overwhelmed — in fact, it often needs that extra intensity to find balance rather than getting lost.

Sip, don't rush

Take a small sip of whiskey, then a draw of the cigar, and pay attention to how the flavors shift when they meet on your palate rather than judging each separately. The pairing is often better than either component alone — that's the whole point of doing this in the first place.
