Smoking Lounge Etiquette: A Quick Guide

A good cigar lounge runs on a mix of written rules and unwritten ones, and most of the unwritten ones come down to a simple idea: this is a shared space built around a slow, relaxed ritual, and everyone in the room is here for roughly the same reason. A few habits go a long way toward keeping it that way.

Smoke what you bought here

If a lounge sells cigars, the general expectation is that you're smoking something purchased from the shop, not a cigar you brought from elsewhere — that's the arrangement that keeps a tobacco-focused lounge in business and legally able to stay smoke-friendly in many places. If you're a member with a locker or bring-your-own privileges, that's different, but check the house policy before assuming.

Buy something if you're using the space

Even where bringing your own cigar is allowed, it's good form to also support the lounge itself — a drink, a snack, an occasional cigar from the case. A cigar lounge only stays open, warm, and welcoming because people patronize it, not just occupy it.

Mind the volume and the phone

Conversation is part of the appeal of a good lounge — it's a social space, not a library — but there's a difference between conversation and a phone call on speaker. Step outside or take it to a quieter corner if you need to take a call.

Offer, don't assume

If you strike up a conversation with someone smoking a cigar you don't recognize, it's fine to ask about it. It's generally not fine to ask for one. Cigars aren't cheap, and most smokers are happy to talk about what they're enjoying without being asked to share it.

Give smoke some space

In a shared lounge, be aware of where your smoke is drifting, especially around people eating or in a tighter seating area. A small shift in position solves most of this without anyone having to say anything.

When in doubt, ask the staff

Every lounge has its own particular culture and house rules — ours included. If you're not sure whether something's okay, just ask. We'd always rather answer a question than watch someone feel unwelcome.

At the end of the day, lounge etiquette isn't really about rules — it's about protecting the thing that makes a good lounge worth visiting in the first place: a relaxed, unhurried place to enjoy a cigar without friction.
